I had the blessing of doing the cover and animation for Leon’s new album, “re:treat.”
a reinterpretation of 24 background songs from animal crossing
a reflection on solitude, hope, and healing
a retelling of a midsummer’s day
So...the best part of this project was when Leon told me the project was about Animal Crossing. I love that game and its simplicity and humor. So I was very excited I would get to play a big part in the project--not only do I get to make the cover, I get to animate for the video! This was by the far the longest animation I've done. Compared to veteran animators, I'm sure this is nothing.
There were many variations that I scrapped in both the artwork and the animation. At some point, I wanted a huge ripple to the sides, I even had Leon's bird-pants as some sort of floaty. There was also an ambitious idea of having the light change as the day passes. But overall, I wanted to feel something peaceful when I look at it.
Leon definitely wanted some sort of water in it. Hence, I chose a river with the thought of a lazy summer ride. The building is inspired by the Roost. And of course we all need some windmill in our Animal Crossing lives.
There were many early sketches of setting ideas, plant studies, and even Animal Crossing studies. I didn't want to directly draw something out of the game but I definitely wanted the hint of it. The waterfalls would've been cool but it didn't seem appropriate for the quiet atmosphere.
This was one of the most challenging projects I've worked on and it just made me want to do more: design, animation, all of it. Despite my heinous struggling, it just made me pretty excited for the next big thing.
